Commercial spaces, indexed by the visual task
Open each application to see which criteria deserve priority. The list is deliberately compact: every project still requires geometry, surface and control inputs before a luminaire can be selected responsibly.
Open offices combine horizontal tasks, vertical face illumination and screen use. A typical review compares 3000 K or 4000 K CCT, CRI 80 or 90+, direct/indirect distribution and a project-specific UGR objective. High efficacy can reduce connected load, but an exposed high-output optic may increase luminance contrast and reflected glare. Daylight harvesting needs sensor placement and calibration that match the facade zones.
Validation path: model maintained illuminance on the defined task plane, inspect vertical and ceiling brightness, then commission occupancy and daylight response in the furnished space. Reflectance assumptions and workstation layout are explicit limitations.
Retail environments need ambient orientation and controlled accent. Beam angle, candela distribution, TM-30 information and color rendering should be read together; CRI alone does not explain every color preference. A 24° accent optic may provide focus from one mounting height and produce excessive contrast from another.
Validation path: use an IES or LDT calculation for aiming and spill, review sample merchandise under the proposed CCT and spectrum, and confirm track or recessed mounting tolerances. Changes in display height and finish remain outside a static calculation.
Clinical, learning and support spaces place different weight on visual comfort, cleaning and control behavior. Diffuse panels can provide uniform ambient light, while examination or presentation zones may need higher vertical illumination and separate scenes. Confirm CCT, CRI, ingress protection where cleaning exposure applies, and emergency integration for the local code context.
Validation path: separate room types, document scene requirements and verify controls with facility staff. Cleanability, ceiling access and operating protocol can be as consequential as rated luminous efficacy.
Hospitality lighting layers decorative, accent and functional sources. Warm CCT and high color quality often take precedence over the highest lm/W, particularly in dining or arrival zones. Drivers must be checked for dimming range, low-end stability and control compatibility because scene transitions expose behavior that a full-output test cannot.
Validation path: mock up critical finishes, test the specified control curve and inspect glare from seated sightlines. Decorative shades and local materials may change delivered distribution.
Efficacy versus visual comfort is a project decision
Maximize lm/W
Lower system power can support energy targets and reduce operating demand. The benefit is measurable only at the delivered light level and control schedule, not from luminaire efficacy in isolation.
Prioritize visual quality
Shielding, distribution, CRI, TM-30 and lower apparent luminance can improve the experience, sometimes with an efficacy trade-off. Evaluate both positions against the occupied view and task.
